Redwood Shores Levee Cleanup

For over 15 years near the end of each August, your Redwood Shores Community Association has sponsored our Annual Levee Cleanup. To benefit the environment, RSCA helps beautify the nearly seven miles of levee surrounding the Shores. Residents and admirers of our beautiful Shores are all invited to join us in this very worthy annual event to help keep this neighborhood and wetland area clean.

Time: 8:00 am til noon
Place: Mariner Park, Redwood Shores, CA 94065
Starters: Coffee, juice and bagels served at 8:30 am
Lunch: Barbeque for all hands at 11:30am

The Shores Levee Cleanup is a fun community event.  As you know from your experience last year, volunteers are assembled into teams and assigned cleanup areas.  Kids and parents, adults and seniors are all welcome and encouraged to get involved in this worthwhile event.  Family work groups handle their areas at their own pace; all help to keep these bountiful nature trails debris-free.

This is a great opportunity for Redwood City residents (and their friends) to enjoy a beautiful summer morning while experiencing a variety of birds and other wildlife. Volunteer and enjoy the splendor of our seven miles of shoreline, including incredible views of the bay.

We hope you will join us again this year; please bring gloves and wear good walking shoes… all pickup tools and trash bags will be provided.  Take pride in enhancing this important Redwood City resource, and join us Saturday, August 24, 8am to noon.

Lunch is on us! As a small ‘thank you’ to our volunteers, a barbeque is sponsored by our friends at the San Mateo Credit Union for all hands.  Barbeque will be served at 11:30am in Mariner Park.

Recology Systems Inc. provides the trash collection containers, and their assistance is gratefully acknowledged. Each year large amounts of trash are picked from the Redwood Shores Levee environment by our volunteers and removed by Recology Systems free of charge.  Every piece of trash that is eliminated is important!

For more information about this event, please contact Nina Boire at  .

To acknowledge his faithful community service and leadership, this year’s cleanup is again dedicated to Pete Hughes. Pete organized this valued community initiative from the beginning and gained the continuing support of civic, business, and community leaders who support this public effort with their time and resources.

A Note from Redwood City Firefighters: Fatal Structure Fire Hits One of Our Own

In the early morning hours of April 1, 2012 a tragic fire tore through a home in Pacifica. The unsuspecting family was caught off guard by the blaze that left two people fatally injured and several others hospitalized.

The event literally hits home for Redwood City firefighter Abel Virgen, because the victims of this blaze are his own family members. The house belonged to the family and sadly, Abel’s grandfather along with his 12 year old cousin, died in the fire. The 10 remaining family members have been displaced from their home indefinitely. The survivors of this horrific event are now in need of staple items such as food, clothing and shelter. Redwood City Firefighters’ Create-a-Smile Foundation, a local non-profit, has established an account with the San Mateo Credit Union dedicated to helping the family with these items. Ultimately our goal is to do everything possible to help Abel’s family establish some sense of stability, while they cope with the unimaginable loss of their loved ones.

Abel is a passionate, hard-working professional in his trade of firefighting. He commits himself daily to preventing the very same tragedies his family now faces.  Please join with your Redwood City Firefighters to help support Abel and his family in this challenging time.

Donations in the name of the Virgen family can be sent to:

Redwood City Fire Station 9 755 Marshall St. Redwood City, CA 94063

Attention: Create-a-Smile-Foundation

The checks should be made to: “Virgen Family Fire Fund”

OktobeRun Half Marathon and 5K

On October 15, 2011, Redwood City will host the 1st Annual OktobeRun Half Marathon and 5K. This will be one of the first half marathons on the Peninsula in years. The half marathon course is flat, scenic, and mostly off-road, perfect for a personal record. Beginning a block from historic Courthouse Square in downtown Redwood City, runners travel off road and join the Bay Trail by the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge to Redwood Shores and back. The 5K course follows the first part of the longer course and is mostly on city streets.

Weather is likely to be perfect for runners. Situated midway between San Francisco and San Jose, our location next to San Francisco Bay keeps our climate moderate and comfortable year round. The average high temperature in October is 73 and the average low is 49.

After the race, runners and their families can stay for a full day of food, drink, and live entertainment at the Peninsula Oktoberfest celebration at Courthouse Square. Early registrants can even get a discount on Oktoberfest tickets.

All proceeds from the race and festival will go to the Redwood City Education Foundation. The RCEF has been working since 1983 to advance and enrich educational opportunities for the 9,200 students of the Redwood City School District.

Make a donation today! While we welcome donations of any amount, we offer a special benefit to families who are able to donate $100 or more in addition to the race fee. You will qualify for a Family Sponsorship which includes a listing on the commemorative race T-Shirt, as well as acknowledgement in a year-end full-page thank you ad in local media. More information can be found at: www.oktoberrun.com

Make a Difference Day

Initiated in 1990, this is a national day is for devoted to helping others by doing volunteer work in the community. The activity can be almost anything. Millions of Americans participate in community improvement projects. It takes the form of cleanup, fixup, painting, and repair in poorer neighborhoods, parks and municipal facilities. It doesn’t matter what project you take on. It doesn’t matter whether you help a non-profit organization, the community, your town, nursing home, a church, a food kitchen, or any other group in need. What matters is that you participate.

Make a commitment to help others for just one day. Make a difference on Make a Difference Day!

Make a Difference Day

When: The Fourth Saturday in October

Did You Know? Each year on Make a Difference Day, ex-President Jimmie Carter gets out his hammer and saw, and helps to build or rebuild housing in underprivileged areas. There is not better example of people helping others than this!

Redwood Shores Annual Levee Clean Up

You CAN make a difference… help CLEAN UP the Shores!

Saturday, August 27, 8:00am – noon

Mariner Park

This is a great opportunity to get outside, enjoy some of Redwood Shores’ beautiful summer weather, and help to clean up and beautify Redwood Shores’ levees for the benefit of all of Redwood City. Each year, dozens of excited volunteers remove tons of debris including tires, wood, rubbish, and the typical flotsam and jetsam that accumulates. Every piece of refuse removed is important, no matter how small!

The levee cleanup day is a fun and meaningful volunteer community event that helps the environment, and helps to beautify Redwood Shores. And for non-Redwood Shores volunteers, it’s a great opportunity to learn about the beauty of the Redwood Shores levees, enjoy the sight of a variety of wildlife, and experience incredible views of the bay.

Coffee, juice & bagels will be available at 8:30 AM before assignments are doled out. After the cleanup, a free barbecue for the volunteers will be served at Mariner Park, as a small ‘thank you’ for helping to beautify and enhance this important Redwood City resource.

Just bring gloves & wear good work shoes… everything else will be provided.

Lions Donate and Show Support for Japan Tsunami Relief

The Tsunami in Japan created widespread devastation in Japan. Like many groups and individuals around the world, the Redwood Shores Lions wanted to help. The Redwood Shores Lions Club has donated $500 toward Japan Tsunami relief, via the Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF). In addition, the club decided to make a thousand cranes to send to Japan. In Japan, an ancient legend holds that if you make one thousand cranes, then you will get one wish. Typical wishes are for long life, happiness, relief from illness or injury, etc. Together, the Redwood Shores Lions Club, the San Francisco State University Lions Club, friends, and family created TWO thousand cranes to wish the people in Japan hope, recovery, and love. Thank you everyone for exceeding our expectations and creating such beautiful works of art to share and express our thoughts across the ocean to those affected by the Japan Earthquakes and Tsunami.

Maple Street Shelter Barbecue

On June 24th, the Redwood Shores Lions hosted a barbecue dinner for the residents of the Maple Street Shelter in Redwood City. The residents enjoyed delicious food, warm summer weather, and participated in a sing-along. A terrific event and a good time was had by volunteers and residents alike.

Everyone enjoyed going behind the scenes and learning more about EA. Thank you EA!

American Lung Association – Bike 4 Breath

On July 23rd, the Redwood Shores Lions will be volunteering at the Island Park rest stop, greeting cyclists with Gatorade, fruit, granola bars and other snacks. Other Lions will be along the Redwood Shores pathways, directing cyclists along the Bike 4 Breath route. The Lions do this every year and it is a lot of fun to see so many smiling faces raising funds for the American Lung Association.

Your Opportunity to Support Music in Redwood Shores

Redwood Shores is fortunate to be home to a large and talented group of student musicians and teachers.  For the past few years, our young pianists, violinists and trumpeters have performed in recitals held at the beautiful Community Room at the Redwood Shores Branch Library.  It has been a wonderful convenience for our local musicians and their families to be able to perform close to home, and these recitals have also added to the range of cultural activities offered at our Library.

The centerpiece of this music-making is a gleaming, black Yamaha grand piano leased by the Library.  The Library now has the opportunity to purchase this fine instrument for $12,000, which equals the original price of the piano discounted by the lease payments made by the Library.  However, given the budget challenges faced by Redwood City, it is unlikely the Library can come up with this amount of money on its own.

Because we recognize the value of the piano to our Library and young musicians, and welcome the opportunity to have a great instrument available for community concerts, meetings and receptions, the Redwood City Library Foundation, RSCA, and local music teachers have joined in a campaign to raise funds for the purchase.  So far, we have made great progress – for example, more than $5,000 has already been given by parents of music students of Redwood Shores resident, Sumi Nagasawa.

Please join us in supporting music in the Shores by making a tax-deductible donation of any amount to the Redwood City Library Foundation, noting on your check that it is for the ” Redwood Shores Library Piano.”  As an incentive, the Library will recognize donors of $500 or more on a plaque prominently displayed in the Library, and RSCA has agreed to a dollar for dollar match for donations of up to $250, up to a total of $2500.

You can mail your contribution to the Library Foundation at 1044 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA 94063, or drop your contribution off at the Redwood Shores Library at the front desk.  RSCA will match your donations based on information retained by the Foundation.
