Redwood Shores Historic Walk

(NOTE: Signboards may not be posted outside the weekend, but the digital version of the route is always available.)

Look for signboards marking points of interest for Redwood Shores while you are looking for means to keep everybody active and learning during the shelter-at-home period. You can find these 9 signboards at various points on Bridge Parkway, Marine Parkway, Marlin Park, Davit Lane, and Shell Parkway. These signboards each have an archival photo and a short history lesson pertinent to that spot on the map.

Alternately, you can log into the Google Maps Redwood Shores Historic Walk link on your phone and take the tour with your mobile device. The digital version has extended text of each the history lesson, as well as a few “Bonus Views” of spots to explore if you’re feeling like stretching your legs even further.

Since 1970 RSCA has been THE advocate on issues that impact the quality of life in Redwood Shores. From early controversies over where Shores children would go to school, to the recent levee crisis with its potential effect on local property values, RSCA has been the primary voice of the Shores community.

As we begin our fifth decade, RSCA continues its efforts to keep the Shores a great place to live and work.

Shores History Now at the Library

For our 40th Anniversary Celebration back in 2010, RSCA put together a “history” of Redwood Shores in many pictures and newspaper articles dating back to the 1960s.

That history will again be on display for the next few months at the Redwood Shores Library. If you missed it in 2010, you should take some time to visit the library and browse through the history of our special community.

Originally “unwanted and unloved”, the Shores is now one of the brightest & best places to live and work on the Peninsula! See how it happened and the work that went into transforming this wonderful community we call home.

“No Feeding” Signs Going Up

On a separate page of this month’s PILOT you will find a draft of the City’s new “no feeding” signs that will be going up in our parks and public areas. Shortly after that you should start seeing similar signs on many private properties around the Shores.

Just a reminder that under California law, feeding wildlife is a punishable offense without regard to whether you are on public or private property.

And feeding by humans can cause unintended harm to ANY of our local or migratory waterfowl or wildlife. Feeding by humans can lead to under-nourishment by replacing the natural diet and lead to the spread of disease among the very animals you think you are “helping”. Feeding by humans can change natural behavior and migratory patterns and lead to local overcrowding. Feeding by humans can lead to more aggressive behavior toward adults AND children.

PLEASE… let’s do our part to keep wildlife wild!

HELP (always) WANTED !

RSCA is entirely a volunteer organization. The list of things that we “could” be doing – things we would like to be doing – continues to grow.

If you have a specific interest in something in the Shores that YOU would like to see improved, and you have 1-2 hours a week to work with RSCA, let’s talk about how we might work together. RSCA can provide support and a platform for action that you might not have as a single individual. You’ll also meet a lot of nice people who share your interest in keep the Shores a GREAT place to live and raise a family.

Redwood Shores’ 40th Anniversary

The Redwood Shores Community Association will be turning 40 this year. We are in the process of putting a celebration together that everybody in the Shores community is invited to.

The committee is in the process of putting together the history of how this great community came to be. We will have on display information about the Shores from its start in the early ’60s. There will be photos showing how the area was developed showing some of the fond memories of the past like when Marine World was a part of our community and a great neighbor.

Those of us that can remember sitting in our back yards listening to the dolphins and whales to who remembers when there was only one road in and out of the Shores. Or better yet there was a time when we did not have a grocery store — anyone remember Byrnes Market?

The Shores is built out and now the RSCA works to keep it a great community. We’re proud how our community has developed, and we want to celebrate 40 years of progress and accomplishments.

Please mark your calendar for the event, to be held Sunday October 17, 2-5PM at the new Redwood Shores School. More details will be coming in the Pilot and our website ( www.rsca.org ). Please plan on attending bring your family.

If you have any memorabilia you might want to share please contact us at . We are also looking for groups who might want to participate with the activities during the celebration — contact us for more information.

The event will take place at the new Shores school and we would like to showcase Shores history and have various activities going on at the same time.

We want to collect photos, newspaper articles or anything that shows how the Shores looked in the past. If you have any of these items we would like to have them reproduced. Please respond to the E-mail below.

We need help with this event, please let us know if you provide some time towards making this day successful.
