RIP Raymond Robinson

The Redwood Shores Community Association joins students and residents of Redwood Shores in mourning the passing of our smiling crossing guard, Raymond Robinson. We will always keep with us memories of your cheerful wave!

A wall of remembrances has been posted at the corner of Bowsprit and Bridge, where Robinson served. Those who have had their days brightened by Robinson’s joyful time here in the Shores have been invited to share their thoughts, memories, and prayers.

Services will be held on August 1st at True Hope Church of God in Christ, 950 Gilman Avenue, San Francisco, CA. A viewing will be available from 9-10AM, and services will be held at 11AM. The Robinson family (through his daughter Dianita) can be reached for further information about the service; information can be found through a sign at the wall of remembrances (with respect to the family, contact information is not posted here online.)

A Message from the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District About Sandpiper Elementary School Expansion Plans

Dear Redwood Shores Community,

The Belmont-Redwood Shores School District is planning to expand Sandpiper Elementary School to provide 6th, 7th, and 8th grades and a total of 220 additional students in grades K-8. This project is intended to offer the families in Redwood Shores a local public school option for grades 6-8 and to help reduce the overall traffic into and out of the Shores. In compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act, the City of Redwood City has commissioned an environmental study, known as an Initial Study and Mitigated Negative Declaration. The document outlines what the impacts might be and how the District proposes to mitigate the potential impacts to a less than significant level. An analysis of potential traffic impacts is included. The study was published on November 4, and public comments will be accepted until December 6, 2016.

You can find the study on the District’s homepage, at www.brssd.org, and you can provide comments to Lisa Costa Sanders, Contract Principal Planner with the City of Redwood City, at 650-780-7363 or . Thank you!

Send Your Kids With A Disaster Snack Pack

As part of September’s National Preparedness Month, help your child create a snack packet to keep in the classroom, in case students need to stay at school for several hours after a disaster or other emergency. Write your child’s name on a 1-gallon Ziploc bag, fill it with 5-7 of the following non-perishable items, and take it to your child’s teacher. We suggest packing the following:

  • Commercially packaged dried fruit, fruit rolls, fruit snacks, granola bars, cereal, cereal bars, protein bars, crackers
  • A comforting item, such as a family photo or small toy

Do not include drinks, try to avoid high-sodium foods, and pack unopened items that will be likely to last for the entire school year.

Sandpiper Spotlight: October 2011

The school year has started off well! We enjoyed a wonderful Back-to-School night on September 8 and are now gearing up for several exciting activities.

This year, our first walking school bus will take place on October 5, International Walk to School Day. Neighborhood liaisons will be in place to help groups of students and parents who walk or ride their bikes and scooters to school. We are trying our best to “keep it green” at Sandpiper School.

The Sandpiper PTA presents “Under the Harvest Moon: Food, Fun & Friends” on Saturday, November 5, at Domenico Winery in San Carlos. This annual fundraiser features a Silent Auction of items and baskets made by the individual classes along with Teacher Gifts of Time and other generous donations by the Sandpiper and Redwood Shores community. The Live Auction, buffet dinner catered by Eatz Catering and dancing are highlights that will make the evening a night to remember! The funds raised by this event will benefit the school and children directly as the Sandpiper PTA provides classroom and student materials, field trip costs, technology, PE equipment, visual arts programs, student assemblies and more.

For more information on donations, sponsorship opportunities or to purchase tickets to the event, please contact Lisa Eliopoulos at

Sandpiper Spotlight: April 2011

As many of you may be aware, our school district will be unable to provide funding for some critical technology needs at our school:  (i) much needed upgrades for student computers in the Sandpiper computer lab (cost $30,000), and (ii) a system upgrade to Sandpiper’s wireless infrastructure (cost $10,000). In order to address these technology funding needs, we are holding a technology fundraiser through the sale of Neighborhood Savings Books (see details below).

On a lighter note, the Sandpiper Multicultural Celebration was held on March 4. Much appreciation to the amazing committee who organized this fantastic event! Over 300 folks enjoyed the diverse food, family fashion show, arts and crafts, and entertainment. It was very exciting to see the debut of the Sandpiper Show Choir! Also, many thanks to the Sandpiper School Garden Committee! The new garden plantings near Rooms 3, 4, and 5 are a reflection of the “seeds of knowledge” and “continuing growth” here at Sandpiper.

Finally, please come to the next PTA General Association Meeting  on Tuesday, March 22 at 7:00 p.m. in Room B, at which time the election of PTA officers for the 2011-2012 school year take will place (see slate of officers listed below). Also, we are honored to have School-Force President Ardythe Andrews as our our guest speaker at our meeting. I hope to see you then!

Sandpiper Youth Club Raises Over $1,000 for Japan Relief

The recent devastation in Japan prompted the children of the Sandpiper Youth Club, lead by the City’s staff person Telisha Brent, to put together a fundraising bake sale to help. Armed with homemade flyers and great enthusiasm, the staff and children promoted their “Bake Sale for Tsunami/Earthquake Relief” — they informed the community and the school, and asked for donations of baked goods or cash to support their endeavor. City Parks staff also agreed to bake cookies, cupcakes, brownies, and other goodies on their own time, in the name of charity.

Over 25 parents brought baked goods from home and got others donated…in fact, they had over 500 cupcakes and lots of other stuff ready to be sold for a good cause. The bake sale took place last Friday March 18 – you might remember that day had a lot of weather, including a tornado warning (!). Despite the weather, an estimated 300 people purchased baked goods, or just made a donation to the cause. That says a lot about the Redwood City community, and about these Sandpiper students!

These amazing kids raised a whopping $1,042 for Japan relief efforts. And through their actions, they also gained a sense of compassion and caring, and a strong feeling that they have made a difference.

The Sandpiper Youth Club is a program of the Redwood City Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department. It’s a fun after school club run by City Parks staff, offering play games, sports, crafts, teaching of life skills, movies, special visitors and presentations, and more! Kids also have homework time during the program. You might want to visit the Parks web page at www.redwoodcity.org/parks .

Sandpiper Spotlight: February 2011

Health and wellness are very important concerns for all parents and teachers. One of the best ways to instill a lifelong appreciation for good nutrition and exercise is through exposing children to working in a garden. Not only do they learn where food comes from, but they also have an opportunity to be involved in physical exercise that is both enjoyable and relaxing. There is nothing so rewarding as pulling out a carrot from your garden to taste its sweet, earthy flavor, unlike anything you can find in a store (even organic). Each time we dig a patch of dirt it is like a new adventure — what worms and bugs are we going to discover this time? Gardening is an activity that wakes up all our senses and constantly sparks our curiosity.

Sandpiper Elementary is in the process of developing a school garden with these ideas in mind. In order for our project to succeed we will need help from our Redwood Shores community. Are you a landscape designer (or do you know one) who could donate some time and expertise to help us design a useful and beautiful garden that will be the pride of our community? Are you a contractor with some spare time to help us build structurally sound elements of our garden? We will definitely accept all the help you can offer. Do you have untreated redwood or cedar 1x6s, 2x6s, 4x4s leftover from your projects? Are you planning to rip out your old deck and don’t know what to do with all the wood that still can be used? We might be able to use it in the construction of planter boxes, benches, and other structures in our garden. Are you an avid gardener whose garden is too small? This is a project for you, for we will need help and guidance in planting and maintaining our garden. If you are interested in participating in our project, please contact our science teacher Ms. Nicole La Count at
