A Message from the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District About Sandpiper Elementary School Expansion Plans

Dear Redwood Shores Community,

The Belmont-Redwood Shores School District is planning to expand Sandpiper Elementary School to provide 6th, 7th, and 8th grades and a total of 220 additional students in grades K-8. This project is intended to offer the families in Redwood Shores a local public school option for grades 6-8 and to help reduce the overall traffic into and out of the Shores. In compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act, the City of Redwood City has commissioned an environmental study, known as an Initial Study and Mitigated Negative Declaration. The document outlines what the impacts might be and how the District proposes to mitigate the potential impacts to a less than significant level. An analysis of potential traffic impacts is included. The study was published on November 4, and public comments will be accepted until December 6, 2016.

You can find the study on the District’s homepage, at www.brssd.org, and you can provide comments to Lisa Costa Sanders, Contract Principal Planner with the City of Redwood City, at 650-780-7363 or . Thank you!

Halloween Walk 2016

Thanks everybody for coming out to the 2016 Halloween Walk. We’ll see you again next year!

Bring your kids in their Halloween costumes to Marlin Park on Saturday October 29th, 2018 @ 1:00 PM sharp for a spooky good time in the park.

Trick Or Treat

We’ll have treats for the little ones, so bring a goodie bag/bucket!

** Event Ends at 2:00pm **

And PARENTS, don’t forget your cameras for photo opportunities with the Good Witch.

Our local RWC Police will also be available to provide voluntary FINGERPRINTING for children of parents who might wish to have this record for identification. Because a child’s appearance can change in a short time, fingerprinting can be the best way to identify a lost child.

Friends of the Library will be holding a BOOK SALE at Marlin Park for all of the Halloween Parade participants, so please visit their table and enjoy a nice selection of books to take home for your reading pleasure. Cash is appreciated !

RSCA holds this event each year for Shores children elementary school age and under.

It’s easy work and lots of fun to watch our children enjoy their “dress-up” time in Marlin Park. Your help will be greatly appreciated!

Give-n-Go Community Donation Drive (with FREE drop-off!)

Here’s a great opportunity to clean house! Take advantage of this free event and dispose of your outdated electronic equipment properly & safely. Bring your old stuff to us and receive a charitable donation (tax!) receipt.

RSCA – collaborating with Goodwill Industries – will accept for recycling old computers, monitors, routers, and other consumer electronics including TVs, stereos, telephones, cell phones/PDAs etc. Hard drives are erased 3 times and shredded for security!

Saturday, October 1, 10am-2pm
RWS Library,
corner of Marine Pky & Bridge Pky
(Enter the parking lot from Bridge Pky.)

There is no charge to bring small appliances, kitchenware, clothing & accessories, shoes, bed and bath linens, bicycles, jewelry, books, and more during this 4-hour event.

Community Meeting for DesignTech Charter School

You may be aware that there is a proposal to build a new facility for the existing Design Tech charter high school on Oracle’s Redwood Shores Campus, and there remain open questions about many aspects of this project.Te proposed facility will accommodate 550-600 students and faculty in grades 9-12. Design Tech is chartered to the San Mateo Union High School District, although the Shores is part of the Sequoia Union High School District.School officials have stated that student enrollment will be determined by a “lottery” system, but it is not yet clear:

  • What qualifications (academic, residential, etc.) are required to enter the lottery? How will the lottery then work?
  • How many students from the Sequoia HS District (Belmont, Woodside, Atherton, San Carlos, Redwood City and Menlo Park) will be accepted? How many students from the Shores will be accepted?

Concerns have been expressed about the effectiveness of the proposed ‘No Driving Policy’ and the potential impact of 550+ high school students on traffic and parking in surrounding areas, ensuring public access to the waterfront during school hours, and on potential overcrowding of the Redwood Shores Library after school hours.

Here’s a chance to get questions answered about all aspects of the proposal to build this facility on the Oracle Campus.

When: Saturday, April 16, 3:00 pm

Where: Oracle Building 600

There will also be representatives of the City to answer questions about City processes involved and approvals required before construction can begin. You can find more information about the existing Design Tech School and proposed new facility at:

City Public Works Meeting

Redwood City Public Works Services is pleased to invite Redwood Shores residents to join them for a Community Outreach Meeting on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at 7:00 PM in the Redwood Shores Library.

Public Works Staff will provide a brief introduction and presentation on Department functions, highlighting activities and topics of special interest to Redwood Shores residents.

Topics will include:

  • The City’s 50/50 Sidewalk Replacement Program (and YES, homeowners will be responsible for half the cost)
  • LED street light replacements
  • Tree pruning service for trees along Redwood Shores Parkway

An informal Q&A will follow the presentation. This event is designed to allow residents the opportunity to meet and speak with Public Works staff, ask questions about neighborhood projects, and learn about and provide input on new and continuing Public Works programs and efforts in Redwood Shores and the City.

Sandpiper Community Meeting

Thank you to all who attended this event! There was a great turnout, and wonderful questions and comments were given to our school district leaders. For those unable to attend, questions about the Sandpiper expansion proposal can still be sent to the district, and RSCA will be sharing a contact point to send those questions as soon as we have it.

On March 12th, RSCA and the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District will be holding a community meeting regarding the proposed expansion at Sandpiper Elementary School. The event will include a walk through of the area, and also a question-and-answer period as to what is planned for the site.

We encourage Redwood Shores residents to attend this important and informative community event.

Eggstravaganza 2016!

It’s time for the RSCA’s annual Eggstravaganza, held every year at Marlin Park in the center of Redwood Shores. Bring all your children and a basket for goodies to the park for the big Egg Hunt, where toddlers and young kids can seek out goodies hidden in the grass and playground. Also, the Easter Bunny will be there to lead off the Egg Hunt and later to pose for pictures with the boys and girls, so be sure to take along a camera as well!

The festivities begin at 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 19th at Marlin Park here in Redwood Shores.

Be sure to arrive early so that your child can line up in the right age category — the eggs disappear quickly, and the whistle begins exactly at 1:00, so be on time! (Please limit your children to 6 eggs each so that everyone can share.)

Our local RWC Police will also be available to provide voluntary FINGERPRINTING for children of parents who might wish to have this record for identification. Because a child’s appearance can change in a short time, fingerprinting can be the best way to identify a lost child. And parents, don’t forget your camera for photo opportunities with the Easter Bunny.
