Eggstravaganza ==MOVED FOR RAIN==

Oh no, the weather has delayed the Eggstravaganza! Please update your calendar, as the Eggstravaganza is being moved from Saturday to Sunday in order to avoid bad weather. Mark the new date your calendars:

April 1 @ 1PM

We apologize for any inconvenience, and hope everybody can still make it out to the park and enjoy the day!

After a brisk and chilly winter, it is finally time to usher in springtime! That means that it’s time for the RSCA’s annual Eggstravaganza, held every year at Marlin Park in the center of Redwood Shores. Bring all your children and a basket for goodies to the park for the big Egg Hunt, where toddlers and young kids can seek out goodies hidden in the grass and playground. Also, the Easter Bunny will be there to lead off the Egg Hunt and later to pose for pictures with the boys and girls, so be sure to take along a camera as well!

The festivities begin at 1:00 PM on Sunday, April 1st at Marlin Park here in Redwood Shores.

Light Up the Shores

Dress up your home and yard with lights, Santa, reindeer, snowmen and win prizes! Winning homes will be featured in The Pilot and on the web.

If you want to be sure our judges see your lighted home, email RSCA when your lights are up and give us your street address and name.

Judging ends on Thursday, December 15th (7PM), so if your house is lighting up your neighborhood, be sure to let us know before the time limit has passed.

Good luck!

Santa Comes to the Shores

On Sunday, December 11, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at the Redwood Shores Library, Santa will make a stop to greet the kids and hear their requests!

Bring your cameras to capture magical moments of your children on Santa’s lap while sharing their requests. Mingle with your neighbors, enjoy cookies and candy canes, hum along to the Christmas Carols played on the piano, and enjoy listening to readings from a new children’s book — Flying Poodles: A Christmas Story — by the author, Karen Morss.

Don’t be late! The line to see Santa can be long…

An Important Message from The Redwood City Police

As we draw closer to the holidays, we are continuing to see an increase in day time residential burglaries throughout our beautiful city. As our investigations unit continues to actively investigate each and every case, we’re continuing to seeing that the majority of these burglaries are occurring during the day when people are typically at work, as the suspect(s) enter unsecured rear yards, and enter un-occupied homes via an unlocked sliding glass, garage door, unlocked, or open windows. These suspects are simply looking for easy access to your homes. They typically take laptops, cash that’s been left out, iPods/iPads, and jewelry that they can quickly sell to a pawn shop for cash.

The pattern of these suspect(s) is that they usually knock at the front door to see if your home. When they get no response at the door, they move to the backyard and start checking for unlocked doors, removing screens, and checking for unsecured windows. If by chance you answer the door and ask what they want, the suspect(s) will come up with an excuse for being at your door, leave you scratching your head, and simply move on to the next quiet house. These burglars rarely travel alone and typically have at least one other person with them as the “look-out,” somewhere on the sidewalk, or riding around on a bicycle in the street. Of the more than a dozen arrests that our patrol staff and detectives have made in the past few months, the age range of the suspects has been 15 to 21-years-old.

You and your neighbors are the eyes and ears for the police department. Be vigilant of this behavior and don’t hesitate to call 911 for anything you believe to be suspicious activity in your neighborhood. Some of our recent arrests of these burglars have occurred because of a great neighbor who was observant and called in what they believed to be suspicious activity or in fact a burglary in progress. Our department is actively working on solving these crimes as we send undercover units out on a regular basis to patrol your neighborhoods and looking for subjects casing your neighborhoods.

Please share this information with your neighbors and help us in reducing these very intrusive crimes. Please lock your gates to your backyards and be sure to lock all doors and windows. If its with in your budget, burglar alarms are a very good deterrent. You can go to our website http://www.redwoodcity.org/police/ to see other great prevention tips and hotlines for reporting graffiti, crime tips, or parking enforcement. You can also find us on Facebook and Twitter for facts and helpful resources to help keep your neighborhoods safe and beautiful.

Redwood City Lunar New Year Celebration

On Saturday, February 5, from 11- 3 at our Courthouse Plaza, Redwood City will be hosting our inaugural Lunar Year Festival. I am pleased to have the Shaolin Culture Center, Somei Yoshino Taiko Ensemble and the Red Panda Acrobats help us welcome the Year of the Rabbit. There will be food, crafts, activities for the kids and martial arts demonstrations.

Kristen Sze, morning news co-anchor and reporter for ABC7 News will be our emcee for the welcome and introductions at 11:00, followed immediately by a lion dance and martial arts demonstration by the Shaolin Culture Center.

I want to hank our presenting sponsor, AT&T for their help in making this event a possibility. I also want to thank many of our other business partners: Stanford University, Kaiser, Recology, First National Bank, San Mateo Credit Union, ABC7 News and Kristen Sze. I also want to thank our community partners; the City of Redwood City, the Civic Cultural Commission and Redwood City International.

I hope that you will be able to join us for our first Lunar New Year celebration. For additional information got to www.RedwoodCityEvents.com.

New Jail Site

At the end of 2010, San Mateo County closed escrow on the site for the new jail that the City assembled on Maple Street, east of Veterans, across the street from our Police Department. The City Council was united in that a new jail is not the type of urban, high density housing that we envisioned for downtown. Under the leadership of Mayor Ira, our City Manager, City Attorney and a team of real estate consultants, the City was able to assemble a site that met most of the requirements of the Sheriff’s office. Thank you to all that helped let the Sheriff’s Office and the Board of Supervisor’s know that a new jail in our downtown was not wanted.

Levees are Certifiable

On January 21, city staff received a letter from FEMA indicating that our levees are certifiable. “.It appears that the Redwood Shores Levee Systems Map meets the minimum certification requirements.” The four-page letter goes on and states that “[levee] system can do and change with time.” This means that the new flood maps will show Redwood Shores as protected from a base flood.

Please join me in thanking city staff and my council colleagues for providing the leadership and means to making this work happen. Working with new regulations from FEMA, the City of San Carlos, the County of San Mateo, and the Department of Fish & Game (just to name a few agencies involved) on a very strict deadline was not easy. By completing the work last year, each of us avoided the cost of flood insurance; a cost that ranged between $1,200 – $1,500 a year per residential property.

I look forward to seeing many of you at RSCA’s Annual Meeting on February 9, where I have the honor to talk about the “State of the Shores,” and answer any questions that you may have.

See you soon!

Inagural Redwood City Lunar New Year Event

I am very excited to share with you that Redwood City International (RCI), the Redwood City Civic Cultural (CCC) Commission, and AT&T (our lead sponsor) are teaming up to host Redwood City’s Inaugural Lunar New Year Celebration on Saturday, February 5th, 2011, welcoming the Year of the Rabbit! The celebration will be at Courthouse Plaza, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

The purpose of the Festival is to provide cultural understanding through celebration and experiences; provide exposure to RCI and our sister-city, Zhuhai, China; and to bring more people to Downtown Redwood City. The Festival will have many activities for the whole family to enjoy, including performances, lion dances, music, children’s activities, demonstrations, and food.

I hope that you will consider being a part of this celebration by being a sponsor, vendor, performer, or just coming by to enjoy the day. This is a great opportunity to help Redwood City with another “first.” Redwood City is quickly becoming recognized as the “Arts and Entertainment Destination of the Peninsula” and we hope that you will join us to be a part of this exciting transformation of our Downtown.
