Nominate for Mayor’s Beautification Recognition Program

The 23rd Annual Mayor’s Beautification Recognition Program is underway!

You’re invited to nominate your own (or someone else’s!) project to be recognized by the Redwood City Mayor and City Council – categories include best architectural design; best remodel; best historical restoration; most beautiful garden or landscape; best compatible building and garden or landscape; or any other category that you might think of.

Redwood City residents, non-profit organizations, and businesses can show their civic pride by submitting nominations. Individuals, homeowners associations, apartment complexes, businesses, non-profits, and others are all eligible. Applications are available online at www.redwoodcity.org/prideandbeautification, by visiting City Hall (1017 Middlefield Road), or by calling 780-7300. The deadline for entries is May 27th, 2011, and screening/review of all nominations will be completed by mid-August. Recognition Awards will be presented at a City Council meeting in September.

The purpose of this program, sponsored by the City’s Pride and Beautification Committee, is to encourage the efforts of community members in beautifying and improving their homes, buildings, and properties, and to publicly acknowledge and recognize their pride in being part of the Redwood City community.

It’s an easy and fun way to foster civic pride in the Redwood City community, beautify the entire City, and, of course, honor people and organizations for their work to make Redwood City a better, more attractive place to live and work.

So … take a look around your neighborhood, and find a property to nominate – or nominate your own!

Sandpiper Youth Club Raises Over $1,000 for Japan Relief

The recent devastation in Japan prompted the children of the Sandpiper Youth Club, lead by the City’s staff person Telisha Brent, to put together a fundraising bake sale to help. Armed with homemade flyers and great enthusiasm, the staff and children promoted their “Bake Sale for Tsunami/Earthquake Relief” — they informed the community and the school, and asked for donations of baked goods or cash to support their endeavor. City Parks staff also agreed to bake cookies, cupcakes, brownies, and other goodies on their own time, in the name of charity.

Over 25 parents brought baked goods from home and got others donated…in fact, they had over 500 cupcakes and lots of other stuff ready to be sold for a good cause. The bake sale took place last Friday March 18 – you might remember that day had a lot of weather, including a tornado warning (!). Despite the weather, an estimated 300 people purchased baked goods, or just made a donation to the cause. That says a lot about the Redwood City community, and about these Sandpiper students!

These amazing kids raised a whopping $1,042 for Japan relief efforts. And through their actions, they also gained a sense of compassion and caring, and a strong feeling that they have made a difference.

The Sandpiper Youth Club is a program of the Redwood City Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department. It’s a fun after school club run by City Parks staff, offering play games, sports, crafts, teaching of life skills, movies, special visitors and presentations, and more! Kids also have homework time during the program. You might want to visit the Parks web page at www.redwoodcity.org/parks .

RWS Lions Club Donates Ping Pong table to Our Common Ground

Last fall, the RWS Lions Club held its monthly meeting at Our Common Ground (OCG) in Redwood City. OCG is a treatment program for adolescents and adults with substance abuse and addiction problems. During that meeting, the RWS Lions were touched by the personal stories of four young adults who are current residents at OCG. In addition, OCG has provided residential and outpatient treatment services to nearly 3,000 substance abusing adults and adolescents in San Mateo County and the greater San Francisco bay area since 1988.

In December, the RWS Lions donated a ping pong table to the OCG residents. They also donated over 20 wrapped gifts of new and gently used games and puzzles for their common area, and various household items for the new girls residence. The Lions look forward to continuing to support this worthwhile program. For more information about OCG, visit their website at www.ocgworks.org.

CityTrees

Most of you probably already know about our wonderful local non-profit group, CityTrees — a volunteer-based organization that has done incredible work in our community enhancing our urban forest.

I’m writing to let you know that CityTrees is launching its end-of-the-year donation campaign to buy trees, tools, and supplies for another big year of building community and greening Redwood City in 2011.

2010 marked their 10th anniversary, and in that decade CityTrees has partnered with Redwood City to plant nearly 2,500 trees, and prune another 400 trees. Over 3,000 supporters and volunteers aided in this effort. This small organization has really made some remarkable achievements — just in 2010, for example, those accomplishments include:

  • Tree planting events where 116 trees were planted
  • Pruning workshops
  • Pruning and tree maintenance events
  • Raising awareness and support of our urban forest at special events
  • Offered a “Tree Tip of the Month” email to share tree-related information
  • Obtained a funding grant and six business sponsorships

I want to encourage you to help keep CityTrees healthy and active in our community by considering a year-end donation of any amount. By the way, 80% of donations go directly to CityTrees’ programs, to help make a lasting difference in our community.

Computer Recycling

The Computer Recycle Committee is reserving Saturday September 11, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm for the annual Computer Recycling event at the Redwood Shores Library. Please add it to your calendar.

This year, the Computer Recycle Committee is working in collaboration with Goodwill Industries. Together, the team has established a goal to receive 17,000 lbs of electronic waste on this day. You may be aware that the Goodwill San Mateo facility focuses a significant portion of its business to “green recycling” of computers and other electronics. Aside from this work, Goodwill uses this business to educate and retrain a transition workforce. This is a great chance for our community to contribute to the cause!
