Lions Donate and Show Support for Japan Tsunami Relief

The Tsunami in Japan created widespread devastation in Japan. Like many groups and individuals around the world, the Redwood Shores Lions wanted to help. The Redwood Shores Lions Club has donated $500 toward Japan Tsunami relief, via the Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF). In addition, the club decided to make a thousand cranes to send to Japan. In Japan, an ancient legend holds that if you make one thousand cranes, then you will get one wish. Typical wishes are for long life, happiness, relief from illness or injury, etc. Together, the Redwood Shores Lions Club, the San Francisco State University Lions Club, friends, and family created TWO thousand cranes to wish the people in Japan hope, recovery, and love. Thank you everyone for exceeding our expectations and creating such beautiful works of art to share and express our thoughts across the ocean to those affected by the Japan Earthquakes and Tsunami.

Police Service Award & Police Heroism Award

The Redwood City Police Department congratulates Officer Perry Garcia and Officer Ryan Adler for being the 2010 recipients of the Police Service Award and Police Heroism Award sponsored by the Peninsula Council of Lions Clubs.

The Awards were presented on Friday, April 1st at the 46th Annual Police and Firefighter Awards Banquet which celebrates the outstanding work of these officers for the benefit of the citizens of the City of Redwood City.

Peninsula Council of Lions Service Award Recipient – Officer Perry Garcia

Officer Perry Garcia has been a dedicated volunteer instructor for the Redwood City Police Activities League (PAL) Karate Program since 1999. During his 11-year tenure, Officer Garcia volunteered over 2,400 hours and helped to mentor over 700 at-risk and potentially at-risk youth in the program. Officer Garcia believed the study of Karate could instill concentration, focus, confidence, respect and humility in local youth who might otherwise not have the opportunity to develop these valuable qualities. Many of his students competed in both local and regional tournaments, and the program successfully graduated 8 black belts along with numerous brown belts. Officer Garcia’s personal commitment to at-risk youth in Redwood City is a positive and lasting connection not only him, but also to the Redwood City Police Department.

Peninsula Council of Lions Heroism Award Nominee – Officer Ryan Adler

On April 14th 2010, Officer Ryan Adler responded to a call of a 9 year-old child choking and not breathing. When Officer Adler arrived at the scene, he found the child had gone into a state of unconsciousness. Officer Adler administered the Heimlich maneuver and was ultimately able to expel the obstruction to the child’s airway which restored the child’s breathing. The child was transported to the hospital, but made a full recovery thanks to Officer Adler’s quick actions that helped save the life of this 9 year-old child.

In addition, OCG has provided residential and outpatient treatment services to nearly 3,000 substance abusing adults and adolescents in San Mateo County and the greater San Francisco bay area since 1988.

In December, the RWS Lions donated a ping pong table to the OCG residents. Our 40th anniversary celebration has now come and gone and despite the rain we had a great turn out. If you weren’t able to attend there’s still ways you can check out what RSCA has done the last 40 years and how this area has developed.

Lions Club & RCPD Offer Child Fingerprinting at Eggstravaganza

Attention Shores Parents: The Redwood Shores Lions Club will be partnering with our own Redwood City Police Department to offer fingerprinting services for your children. This valuable safety tool is instrumental to assist relevant agencies in the event your child becomes lost or abducted. A current photo ID and fingerprints provide law enforcement agencies powerful tools to launch an investigation. Inking your child’s fingerprints is quick, painless (maybe a little messy, but we’ll make sure to have something on hand and help out with the clean-up) and fun!

All of this will be taking place at the Eggstravaganza, held this Saturday the 27th, 1PM at Marlin Park here in Redwood Shores. Read more about the Eggstravaganza here at RSCA.org to find out what other exciting and fulfilling events to expect.

So please join the Redwood Shores Community Association, the Lions Club and our Police Department for this added service at our Annual Eggstravaganza, and support our efforts to stop crimes against children.
