The City of Redwood City has begun implementation of its Financial Sustainability Plan, which seeks to increase revenues and reduce expenditures in order to address an anticipated structural imbalance of $12 million in the City budget by fiscal year 2022-23. The first phase of the financial sustainability plan includes reductions of $3.7 million in fiscal year 2018-19, and an additional $2.3 million in fiscal year 2019-20. Joining “Friends of the Library” Reaps Community Rewards

Let’s take a quick poll of Shores residents — how many of you are members of the Friends of the Redwood City Public Library? Only a few? Ok, how many have ever heard of the Friends of the Library? A few more … Finally, how many of you enjoyed, or would enjoy, the many wonderful free programs that the Friends provide for kids, adults, and families?

The Friends is a non-profit group of volunteers who raise funds for one reason only: to benefit the community using Redwood City’s four libraries, by making significant gifts to expand Library programs. The Friends provide a truly remarkable range of services, for example:

  • Programs for kids and adults featuring books, films, and music
  • Career and technology education and assistance programs
  • The famous Dad & Me Programs
  • Family Night and Saturday activities
  • KinderCard program to provide kindergartners with Library cards
  • Literacy programs
  • Parenting workshops and cultural arts programs
  • Online tutor assistance
  • Children’s summer reading programs
  • …and the list goes on and on!

Funds are raised through their great bookstore located at the Downtown Library, and through memberships in the Friends of the Library, which start at just $10. Take a look at the Friends website at www.redwoodcity.org/library/friends_of_the_library.html — the more members there are, the more great programs like those listed above for kids, youth, adults, and families can be provided, and the more benefit to the Redwood Shores residents and our entire community.

I invite everyone in Redwood Shores to join the Friends of the Redwood City Library today. And of course visit the Redwood Shores Library at 399 Marine Parkway, and go online at www.redwoodcity.org/library to learn about everything we do.

Your Opportunity to Support Music in Redwood Shores

Redwood Shores is fortunate to be home to a large and talented group of student musicians and teachers.  For the past few years, our young pianists, violinists and trumpeters have performed in recitals held at the beautiful Community Room at the Redwood Shores Branch Library.  It has been a wonderful convenience for our local musicians and their families to be able to perform close to home, and these recitals have also added to the range of cultural activities offered at our Library.

The centerpiece of this music-making is a gleaming, black Yamaha grand piano leased by the Library.  The Library now has the opportunity to purchase this fine instrument for $12,000, which equals the original price of the piano discounted by the lease payments made by the Library.  However, given the budget challenges faced by Redwood City, it is unlikely the Library can come up with this amount of money on its own.

Because we recognize the value of the piano to our Library and young musicians, and welcome the opportunity to have a great instrument available for community concerts, meetings and receptions, the Redwood City Library Foundation, RSCA, and local music teachers have joined in a campaign to raise funds for the purchase.  So far, we have made great progress – for example, more than $5,000 has already been given by parents of music students of Redwood Shores resident, Sumi Nagasawa.

Please join us in supporting music in the Shores by making a tax-deductible donation of any amount to the Redwood City Library Foundation, noting on your check that it is for the ” Redwood Shores Library Piano.”  As an incentive, the Library will recognize donors of $500 or more on a plaque prominently displayed in the Library, and RSCA has agreed to a dollar for dollar match for donations of up to $250, up to a total of $2500.

You can mail your contribution to the Library Foundation at 1044 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA 94063, or drop your contribution off at the Redwood Shores Library at the front desk.  RSCA will match your donations based on information retained by the Foundation.

Friends of the Redwood City Public Library Update

Here’s a shining example of a volunteer effort really making a difference: so far this fiscal year, the non-profit volunteer group Friends of the Redwood City Public Library has raised and committed over $71,000 to fund Library programs including film/music/book series for adults, children/young adult programs, Family Author Nights at schools, summer reading programs, Traveling Storytime, Live Homework Help, and more. You can learn more about the Friends’ great accomplishments at their website — www.redwoodcity.org/library/friends_of_the_library.html . You’ll also see how easy it is to become a member of the Friends and help to continue the wonderful work they do! While you’re there, read their Spring Newsletter.

And, be sure to visit the Friends bookstore at the Downtown Library for unbelievable deals on all kinds of books (all sales go to benefit the Library). Right now, the bookstore features a special Mother’s Day and Gardening books display you might want to check out. It includes a varied collection of children’s books, mom topics, wonderful cook books, and much more. There’s also a small collection of Easter books but get there quick before they’re sold out! You’re really going to want to get over there to check out the Friends’ “Giving Them Away!” sale – they’ve discounted a lot of fiction paperbacks – regularly $2 each, they’re are on sale for just $1 each OR 6 for $5! This sale lasts through this week only.

The volunteers of the Friends of the Redwood City Library work hard to help bring great programs and materials to the community – please consider becoming a member. Membership starts at just $10 a year for an individual! That’s a small investment you can make in your community’s library, and you’ll be helping to enhance and improve Library services. Also consider volunteering with the Friends of the Library — get all the information online!

Library Cleanup Days

Did you know that the Redwood City Library system has been recognized as the BEST library in the Bay Area, of any size? One reason is our great volunteers, and you can help maintain that high standard by participating in the Library’s quarterly cleanup days. These fun volunteer opportunities include “shelf reading” (ensuring books on the shelves are in the correct order), cleaning children’s book covers, and pulling ripped or damaged books from our shelves.

It’s so easy to volunteer — locations vary depending on where you’d like to volunteer, and which libraries have the most need. You can also choose the hours, as long as they’re between 10 am and 5 pm. We do ask for a minimum of four hours in order to really make the most of your valuable volunteer time.

Call to arrange the best time and location for your volunteer work as part of a quarterly Library cleanup day!

When:

  • 3/19/2011
  • 5/21/2011

Discover Your Baby

A special program for families with infants and young toddlers, sponsored by the Redwood City Parks, Recreation and Community Services, is being expanded to 2 sessions. Beginning on Tuesday, September 27th DISCOVER YOUR BABY Parent-Infant Guidance Classes will have morning and afternoon classes, in 5-week sessions, at the Redwood Shores Public Library.

DISCOVER YOUR BABY provides focused attention to both parent and child in a safe and challenging play setting. Classes are held in a relaxed and peaceful space that encourages babies and young toddlers to become attentive, curious and secure. Parents are the natural experts, learning from their own child, other parents and babies and from the parent educator. Weekly 1.5 hour classes are limited to 6 families.

Enjoy your child’s unfolding developmental process. Become a mindful, sensitive observer as you focus on what your child can do and learn to read your baby’s cues. Balance baby’s needs with your own as you tune in to your unique child and family circumstance and become more confident in your parenting choices. Learn how to create an optimum home environment for your child’s growth without expensive toys or gimmicks.

The morning class (10:30 am to 12 noon) is for older babies (8 to 16 months); the afternoon class (1:30 to 3 pm) is for younger babies (newborn to 10 months). Moms and Dads are welcome. Grandparents may join us after the first class.
